Where does your gasoline tax money go?
Did you know that when you fill your tank with gasoline, for every gallon you pay 38 cents in tax?
18 cents goes to the Federal Government, and 20 cents to the State.
The state portion flows into the Transportation Trust Fund, a constitutionally protected fund for the maintenance of State transportation infrastructure.
Did you also know that less than 20% of that money goes to concrete, asphalt and steel. The rest is spread to indirect costs, for only one example the $60 million siphoned off to pay State Police in the 2014-15 budget year.
This is happening in a State that, according to the Highway Needs Study commissioned by Louisiana Act 334, had a backlog in “condition, acceptable level of capacity, alignment, lane and shoulder” of $12.5 billion.
Send me to Baton Rouge and I will see that your gas tax money is spent on your roads.
